Throughout more than a decade of researching and writing about home security, I have witnessed an ongoing debate over whether home security technologies really deter burglary or not. I’m inclined to believe they do. Why? Because I’ve read so many studies in support of the idea.
One such study is a 64-page report from the FBI. If you don’t want to read the entire report yourself, check out this post from Safe Home. Their people read the report and broke it down into bite-sized chunks of data that are easy to digest.
It’s clear from FBI data that burglars are not fond of home security systems. If you still doubt, here are three report statistics that should settle the issue once and for all:
1. 83% Look for Signs of Security Systems
A surprising 83% of burglars actively look for signs of a home security system when targeting properties. They look for video surveillance cameras. They look for yard placards, window decals, and door signs that would indicate a home is equipped with a professionally monitored alarm system. Why?
Surveillance cameras and alarm systems significantly increase the chances of getting caught. Burglars are well aware that surveillance cameras generate evidence investigators can use to find them. That same evidence can be used to prosecute them in court.
As for monitored alarm systems, they provide early warnings that allow monitoring personnel to contact law enforcement quickly. The faster law enforcement is called, the faster they can arrive on scene. The risks just aren’t worth it when burglars have softer targets to choose from.
2. 60% Avoid Homes Armed With Security Systems
Next up, 60% of burglars admit to avoiding homes with security systems. If they look at a new target and see surveillance cameras for example, they will bypass that home and look for another target. I have already explained why; there is no need to rehash the information.
The point here is that the majority of burglars want nothing to do with home security systems. Installing one that includes visible exterior video cameras is the easiest and most effective way to deter burglary.
Exterior video cameras are especially effective because they are highly visible. The presence of a couple of exterior cameras forces a burglar to wonder what other devices the house might be equipped with. Cameras offer a great way to put a seed of doubt in a burglar’s mind.
3. 87% Will Abandon a Burglary Attempt If an Alarm Is Discovered
What if a burglar discovers the presence of an alarm system after beginning the process of breaking in? The data shows that 87% of burglars will abandon their attempts. Only 13% will continue. That’s pretty impressive.
This particular statistic shows just how afraid burglars are of home security systems. They are scared enough to have a change of heart once they realize that an alarm system could mean getting caught. Off they go in search of a softer target in another neighborhood.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
Vivint Home Security stands out as one of the best home security brands that recommend installing professionally monitored home security to prevent burglary. And why not? The numbers don’t lie. Studies consistently show that alarms and security cameras deter burglars. A home security system with both is a powerful tool for keeping burglars at bay.
Even an entry level security system is more effective at deterring burglary than no system at all. So, if you want to keep your home safe from intruders, consider investing in monitored home security. It is an investment that pays off in deterrence.
